I had a face-to-face meeting with the hiring manager. They asked me about my work background, skills, and what motivates me. I also answered some practical questions related to the job. The interview lasted about 20 minutes and went well.
- Could you tell me about your cooking experience and your specialties?
Marketing Associate
After applying for the role, I was sent a 4-part assignment upfront before any recruiter or hiring manager interaction. I hesitated because it felt like free work and I was concerned about my ideas being used, despite assurances otherwise. A week after submitting the assignment, I followed up and was told they were moving in a different direction. I received a generic email stating the Director liked my work but they were proceeding differently, which confused me since I never got an interview. It felt like a waste of my time and disrespectful. Ideally, a hiring manager should review candidates and speak with them before requesting such a significant assignment.

Executive Sous Chef
Recruiter hit me up on LinkedIn. Had a quick phone chat with the recruiter where they mostly asked about my background and the volume of business I've handled. Then, I had to do a personality assessment. After that, I interviewed with the regional chef. I also spent 4 hours staging at one of their locations. Then I had interviews with the GM and EC. Another phone interview was set up with the EC at a different location. The recruiter told me I'd get an offer by the end of the day, but I never got it and instead got a generic rejection email the following week.
- How would you describe your management style?
- What value would you add to our team if we hired you?
- Could you share your current targets for labor and food costs?

The interviewer seemed to feel threatened by my confidence. They asked if I'd be starting as a to-go specialist, and I said yes, but added that with my work ethic, I doubted I'd be behind the counter for long since I've always moved up quickly and give everything my all. The interviewer's response was, 'There's a fine line between confidence and cockiness,' which really put me off the job. Honestly, I was glad not to hear back, even though the manager said he'd let me know in 3 days. The staff seemed cool and it's a place I like to eat at, but I'll never go to the El Segundo location.
- Do you have prior serving experience, and how do you handle working in busy settings?
