The interview process started with a recruiter screen and then included interviews with the hiring manager, and I thought there was going to be a final interview. Tropic recruited me directly and we were scheduling my final interview when they paused hiring and asked if we could pick it back up in March. I reached out again then, and they said they'd check with the hiring manager about the role since it had just re-opened. Then I got an automated email saying my application was denied. Considering how much time candidates put into interviews, an email with more info would've been nice since I made it all the way to the final round. Just a heads up for when you talk to Tropic's team and spend your time interviewing for a new role.

Behavioral Technical Case Presentation

It was a long but pretty simple interview process. Started with a 15 min phone call with the COO, then a 30 min Zoom chat with the hiring manager. After that, there was a 30 min Deep Dive Zoom with the hiring manager and a Tropic rep, which involved an Apple negotiation scenario, so brush up on some quick math. The next step was a Mock Negotiation. This part was quite challenging - take your time with the case study and definitely research how software seats work if you don't know already. The team was really friendly and you could tell they liked their jobs. They were also super quick to respond, which was great because I know a lot of places have been ghosting candidates lately. Every thank you email I sent got a reply. The only downside was not getting feedback when I asked for it, but that's okay. It's a really neat business model, and the pay and benefits seem good. It wasn't the typical interview process I'm used to, but it was a positive experience.

Behavioral Presentation

I had a phone screen, then two 30-minute interviews, and a mock presentation. They gave me time to ask questions before the presentation, but the interviewer seemed passive aggressive and unhelpful. They sent old instructions by mistake and didn't follow up with new ones. When I asked about customer criticisms in the mock instructions, they were aloof and then asked me those same questions during the presentation, even though they hadn't given me clear answers. I've been in this field for years and used the Challenger methodology successfully for renewals and expansion. It's not surprising they struggled in Q4 with an easy product. It felt like there's a gatekeeping or bro culture, possibly company-wide given the lack of diversity, where unconscious bias and lack of inclusivity overshadow great candidates. It felt like a waste of time, and maybe my enthusiasm was too much. Ultimately, I was rejected by a mediocre leader I could outperform, so in this case, rejection was protection.
