Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tropic.
Account Executive
I talked to a recruiter first, and then the CRO. The recruiter was great and really efficient. The candidate portal gave tips on how to prepare for interviews, mostly suggesting the STAR method. But when I met the CRO, my prep wasn't helpful because he had a different approach. When I asked him about challenges for new hires, he got upset and went on a long explanation about how they work more than 40 hours a week and that people say they want the job but don't want to put in the time. While I appreciated the honesty, it conflicted with the company's claim of good work-life balance. Sales roles often have different perks than other departments, but the conversation felt off after he got so intense about the required hours.
- Could you tell me about the average size of deals you closed in your last position?
- What challenges do you foresee a new employee facing in this role?
Account Executive
The interview process was pretty standard. My recruiter was great and kept me in the loop. Tropic also uses a candidate portal which made things easy. Two things I noticed were: 1.) The process felt very one-sided. Round 1 was a 30 min video call with the recruiter where she asked most of the questions and I only had 2 mins at the end to ask mine. Round 2 was a quick 15 min chat with the hiring manager. Round 3 was a 30 min disco with only 5 mins for questions. 2.) When I asked about the lack of women and parents on the sales team, the recruiter was upfront about them being underrepresented but they are trying to improve diversity. She did advise me not to bring this up with the hiring manager in our first meeting.
- What is your unique strength in sales?
Account Executive
Started with a recruiter screen, then a call with the VP. After that, there was a mock interview which was a call with the Director. They actually split the Director call into two 30-min calls. It seems like they really only cared about the mock interview, so maybe they should have just started with that.
- Can you describe your most successful deal?
- How would you instruct someone on effective sales techniques?
- What do you consider the most critical element in the sales cycle?
