& Process

The interview process was pretty good and went well. They asked some deep GIS questions to see what I knew technically. They also checked my problem-solving, leadership, and time management skills by giving me some situations to see how I'd handle things, lead teams, and get stuff done on time. It felt like a thorough check of both what I know and my soft skills, and I got a good sense of what the job is about.

I had an initial phone chat with HR for an entry-level software engineer role where we went over my internship experience and some basic behavioral stuff. Then I got called back for the first onsite interview next week. There, I was given a packet with one technical problem about matching parentheses using stacks. After that, I had two more technical interviews with team leads and senior engineers, where we used a whiteboard. Strong C++ and data structure/algorithm knowledge was essential. The HR person was really professional, and the interviewers were super nice and answered my questions. I didn't get an offer, but the culture felt really welcoming, and everyone was polite. I'd recommend interviewing with them.

The interviews themselves were fine. The process consisted of an initial phone screening with a recruiter, followed by one interview with the hiring manager and one with the whole team. During the last interview, I was told a final decision would be made within three weeks and I'd be notified either way. I followed up with the recruiter a month later after hearing nothing, and was told they'd already moved forward with someone else. I'm disappointed that I was among the final candidates and they didn't have the decency to send even a simple email with the decision.

I sent my resume and a detailed cover letter straight to the HR Manager at ALK. The very next day, they emailed me to set up an initial phone interview. A day or two later, I talked with the HR Manager. He asked the standard, basic questions like, "Tell me about your previous role at..." and then asked about my salary history and what I expect. When I inquired about the next steps, I was told I'd be contacted soon for a face-to-face meeting. I sent the usual thank-you note after the interview. A week passed, then another, and still no word from the HR Manager, even though he said he'd contact me to schedule the in-person meeting. I sent several follow-up emails over the next few weeks and left a few voicemails, but he never answered his phone. I never heard back. It seems like many people share similar unprofessional experiences.
