Cashier
The manager was nice and the questions weren't too hard if you have some experience, like from volunteering. It was mostly getting to know you questions, with a few situational ones. Make sure your resume is solid and you're prepared. I also had my references typed out and ready. At my location, I had to pitch the warranty that cashiers are required to sell, which was probably the toughest question.
- What's your approach to handling multiple customers simultaneously?
- Can you share an instance where you lacked motivation and how you overcame it?
- Given the store's guarantee, could you present it to me as if I were a customer?

I applied online and got a call 2-4 days after the job posting. I had to call them back because I missed their call as I wasn't available during the weekend. Before the interview, I researched their Canadian and US websites, and Wikipedia to learn about the company. I also looked through the GlassDoor interview sections to understand what to expect. I wrote down the toughest questions and practiced answering them using my own knowledge. You don't need to memorize everything, just know generally what you're going to say. I spoke to the main manager and scheduled my interview for Thursday. When I arrived 10 minutes early, I had to wait for the manager in charge of my 1-on-1 interview. I was the only one interviewing that day, and the manager was really nice and open. Considering the amount of research I did beforehand, the interview was quite easy. After we finished, she set up a training day for the following Thursday, which also went well. The staff were nice, and she was surprised I knew their mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, as apparently, not many people know it. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't researched the company in advance. The rest of the questions I couldn't add were: -Do you have any questions for me? . What kind of training should I be expecting? . What is a typical day for a cashier? (I asked 2, as it seemed she expected me to ask 2 ><') - Why do you want to work in retail? . Because I realized at my previous job that I loved working with people. (You are a people person) - How do you feel about working for a long time in a single spot, won't you get bored? . Like I had say about my previous job, I love to work with people. Although I had to take care of the customers coats in the locker room, I liked to chat with the people that came to put their stuff. (You find fun about discussing with the costumers, so its never boring) -How long do you want to work here? . I'm free, my schedule is empty and I'm not a student for the time being. I want to work full time. (Part time / Full time, for the longest possible) -What do you see in a leader? . In a leader, I see someone who is like a friend but also someone who can bring me back on the right path when troubles arise. (A kind and open leader who is also serious when the situation called for it)
- Can you tell me what the mascot of Toy'R'Us is?
- Could you introduce yourself?
- Describe a situation where you had to resolve an issue, whether from work or school.
Cashier
I had a quick phone chat and then went in for an in-person interview with the same lady. The whole thing wrapped up in about two weeks. She asked me some standard questions about myself and had me do a little sales pitch for batteries.
- Can you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?
- Could you demonstrate your sales skills by trying to sell me some batteries?
