Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tommy Bahama.
Sales Associate
Applied and interviewed with the assistant manager and manager over two days. Mentioned no recent retail experience but had customer service background. Both interviewers were encouraging and said they would call either way, but no follow-up occurred. Several months later, I reapplied for a seasonal role, thinking that might be what they were looking for. Went through the same interview process and questions again, and still no follow-up. It makes me question why they interview candidates if they're not interested. I definitely wouldn't want to work for the Company now, given this lack of transparency, which might be indicative of how it would be working there.
- Tell me about a past work experience where you encountered a difficult customer and how you managed the situation.
- How would you manage a scenario where multiple customers enter the store simultaneously?
Sales Associate
I applied online, which was a very simple and vague form. About three weeks later, the assistant manager called me to set up an interview. When I got to the store, the manager asked me to walk around and 'explore' before the interview started. The store manager conducted the interview and asked me about my observations from exploring the store. Then, they asked typical interview questions like why I wanted to work for Tommy Bahama, about a time I improved a bad situation, and about a time I needed teamwork to solve a problem. The interview was about 20 minutes. The manager said they would be in touch. I got a job offer two weeks later and went to pick up my uniform a few days after that.
- How would you assist a guest who appears unhappy upon entering the store?
- What motivates your interest in working for Tommy Bahama?
- Describe a situation where you successfully resolved a negative experience.
Sales Associate
They made me do two interviews. The first one went well so I went to the second one, about a week or two later. Second manager didn’t seem to like me. They made me think I was getting the job but they ghosted me. If you’re desperately looking for a job don’t come here because they keep you waiting and don’t tell you if you got the job.
- What motivated your interest in Tommy Bahama compared to other retail opportunities?
- Describe a time when you had to take the lead in a situation.
