First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at TJ Maxx.
Assistant Store Manager
The interview process was pretty smooth and easygoing. It involved a video interview, followed by a couple of phone calls, and then wrapped up with an in-person meeting. It wasn't overly challenging, and the questions were pretty standard, with no unexpected difficulties.
- What was the sales volume of your previous store?
Store Manager
The interview process was primarily based on behavioral questions typical for retail roles. It started with a recruiter call, who was friendly and easy to talk to. I was eligible to proceed to the next interviews but decided to withdraw my application. There seemed to be a disconnect in communication between their recruiting and field management teams. I live in a different state, and this crucial information wasn't relayed to the District Manager. I received an email from him questioning why we couldn't meet in person, which was a pretty important detail. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my interview because my wife went into labor. They offered to reschedule, but the only available day coincided with my out-of-state move, picking up family from the airport, and taking my newborn for a checkup before we left – all of which were fixed appointments I couldn't change. The recruiter seemed slightly put off that I couldn't make that specific day. I could have met any other time, any other day. She mentioned I could contact my recruiter once I was settled. Her overall demeanor felt off, and it just didn't feel like the right fit, so I withdrew. I believe job opportunities are a two-way street; they should value what you bring, and you should appreciate the chance to grow with the company. That wasn't the impression I got.
- How do you get your team motivated?
- Describe a situation where you had to deal with an underperforming team member.
Store Manager
Got a quick response after applying, and a phone screening with the recruiter was scheduled about 10 days later. The interview mostly involved typical situational questions like 'What to do when?' and 'How did you handle this?'. They mentioned narrowing it down to three candidates for the next stage, but I never heard back after the phone screen. Honestly, I wouldn't have continued with them even if I had gotten a call. The recruiter gave me an unpleasant vibe, a bit arrogant in how she spoke. But, to be fair, she probably didn't get a good vibe from me either, otherwise I would have been contacted. It just wasn't a good match for either of us.
- Describe a time you had to deal with an underperforming associate.
- What strategies do you use to motivate your team and maximize their performance?
