The process was fast-tracked to match my other interview. It included a take-home analytics challenge, followed by a virtual onsite. The onsite covered SQL, a case question, a live 1-hour analytics challenge, and product/behavioral questions. I found the 2-day take-home to be straightforward and enjoyable. The SQL and case questions were as expected. I was surprised by the live analytics challenge, but it was a good opportunity to show my ability to analyze quickly.

The interview process was great overall. The team was friendly and clear about what to expect. It included a chat with the hiring manager, an analytics take-home task that was given 5 days to complete, and a virtual on-site. The on-site had a case interview, an analytics problem, a SQL test, and a behavioral chat with the hiring manager.

I got referred by someone who works there (after a previous referral didn't get a response). I interviewed at Thumbtack in San Francisco in July 2017. First, there was a phone screen with the recruiter, followed by a take-home analytics test. The recruiter call was pretty standard, discussing my interest in the company, the role, and my past work experience. The recruiter seemed a bit junior and couldn't offer much insight into what product analysts do at Thumbtack, nor did they help much with the take-home test, giving very general answers to my questions. The take-home test itself was interesting, but the analytics team didn't provide any clear expectations or guidance on the depth of analysis they wanted. I was told it would take 2-3 hours, and I submitted an analysis that met that time requirement. However, the team was looking for more insights and analysis beyond just answering the questions, which wasn't communicated beforehand. It's unclear what they're actually looking for, and the test seems designed for someone already familiar with Thumbtack's data and operations. The feedback I got on my analysis wasn't helpful either; they mentioned what they liked and disliked but offered no specific guidance on how to improve or what kind of analysis and responses they were seeking.
