I had an initial chat with the recruiter. Then, the hiring manager called me for a phone interview. After that, I went onsite for a two-part interview. First, I met with the hiring manager alone. Then, I had an interview with two other people, one of whom was a Sr. Analyst and the other was the head of Operations. The interview went well overall, though the hiring manager seemed a bit down about the job and the company's systems and processes. She even apologized for being negative and made a comment about my resume format, which I thought was unnecessary. Given how positive Zappos is supposed to be, I was surprised by the attitude, especially since I was excited about the possibility of working there and even considered a pay cut. I could tell she wasn't going to be my manager. I hope the person who got the job is successful! They asked some questions, like 'what would your fight song be', to try and keep up Zappos' culture vibe. But honestly, I didn't really feel that from most people I met. It felt a bit formal and old-fashioned, not the unique and embracing culture I expected.

I had three phone interviews and then they flew me out to Vegas. The trip has 2 layovers coming from the east coast--they don't want to spend the money for a direct flight. The interview process was straightforward, I met with lots of team members. They contacted me right away to offer me a different position than what I interviewed for at significantly less money. I was not pleased. I would not have wasted my time flying 10 hours each way for such a paltry offer (lower than I was previously told!), considering the amount of experience I bring to the table.

The Zappos interview process is kinda different and I like that. There are a few rounds of interviews, but it gives you a good opportunity to get a lot of your questions and concerns out there and meet different people who could be your future coworkers. It also gives you the chance to interview them just as much as they are interviewing you. I really appreciate that they put in the time and effort to make sure they find someone who fits with the team and company culture.
