The Zappos Family Financial Analyst Interview Questions
& Process

I signed up for Zappos Insider because I was drawn to their fun/quirky/cool culture. After submitting my resume and answering some basic and fun questions, I attended an Insider event which gave me a great feel for the company culture, though it was a bit awkward like most networking events. A few weeks later, I saw an opening for a Senior Financial Analyst, which perfectly matched my skills, so I applied. A recruiter contacted me via email, asked me to complete a formal online application, and scheduled a 1-hour remote Excel challenge involving pivot tables, vlookup, and basic financial statement analysis. After passing the Excel test, I had my first phone interview with the recruiter. We discussed my background and skills, and I emphasized my enthusiasm for Zappos' values and culture by providing examples of how I've fostered positive workplace environments in previous roles. The conversation went well until the recruiter asked about my salary expectations. When I shared my previous salary, she revealed the offered salary was 40% lower. Despite her attempts to justify the lower salary using a cost-of-living calculator for my new location, I was uncomfortable with the significant pay cut and its potential impact on future earnings. She stated there was no room for negotiation as I was already at the top of their range. Consequently, I declined the next interview stage and continued my job search, ultimately finding a similar role with a higher salary than my previous one.

So I had my initial interview call with their recruiter, she was great and made it feel more like exploring options than a formal interview. Then, a few days later, there was a technical interview. It was super fast and 30 minutes felt short, but the interviewer was really good at using the time for solid questions. They stressed having bullet points of your past experience ready and being able to explain it clearly and quickly. The next step was a full day of interviews onsite. Again, it felt more conversational than awkward, with new interviewers every thirty minutes. About 80% of the questions were technical, focusing on how you think rather than just your technical skills. They really wanted to know if you're familiar with Zappos' history, their value, who they compete with, and current market trends.

It was a really long and tiring interview process. First, I had two calls with recruiters, then one call with team members. After that, I had an onsite interview. For the onsite, they flew me in the night before. The next day was packed with back-to-back 30-minute interviews with the whole team, and also a couple of "culture fit" chats with recruiters.
