First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Y (YMCA).
Program Director
Had a quick phone screening, then a short phone interview. After that, there was a one-on-one Zoom interview with the facility director. Then a group interview with the directors at the facility, and finally, an interview with the COO.
- Can you explain your motivation for applying to this role?
Program Director
I emailed my resume and cover letter and got a response to set up a phone interview the next day. The phone interview was on a Tuesday, and by the following Monday, I scheduled a face-to-face interview with the senior membership director and executive director, which was the following Tuesday. Two weeks after that, I interviewed again with those two, plus the current wellness director who oversees two branches, and someone from HR. The whole process was pretty smooth, and they were good about giving feedback and updating me when I followed up. I got my offer two weeks later.
- Can you share an example of when...
Program Director
I applied via email to HR as instructed on the website. I received an email acknowledging the submission deadline. It took 5 weeks after the deadline to get the HR screen call. The request for an in-person interview came a few days after the HR call. The HR phone interview was professional and included STAR questions. The in-person interview was with 2 members of the location's executive team and started with "are you ready for the change?". Coming from the for-profit world was viewed negatively. I'm not sure why I was called in if they weren't planning to hire from outside not-for-profit.
- What would a former subordinate say is the hardest part of working for you?
- What would your prior superior say is the hardest part of working for you?
