First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Y (YMCA).
Manager
It was a formal, in-person interview. I met with a representative from the department I applied to and someone from HR. We went through standard questions about my previous experience and skills, as well as problem-solving questions. The interview started on time, and the interviewer asked good follow-up questions based on my responses.
- What motivates you to want to work at the Y?
Business Manager
I was recruited by an outside company that partners with the YMCA. First, I had a phone chat with the recruiter. Then, I had an interview with the Branch Executive and the Business Manager. The Branch Executive asked me typical interview questions about my skills, what I could contribute, and my knowledge of the YMCA. The Business Manager's questions were really detailed, wanting to know my entire work history at my previous job and expecting very thorough answers. It was a pretty tough interview.
- So, where do you see yourself in five years?
- Tell me about a time you came into conflict with your supervisor.
- What are your skills?
Business Manager
I interviewed with the YMCA branch team and the Regional Business Managers in the Pikes Peak area. It seemed to go well, and that same day I got an email from HR asking if I could meet with the Regional Executive VP. I thought this meeting would be for the official offer. But on the day of the meeting, HR emailed saying it was canceled and they were re-posting the job, asking if I was still interested. Confused, I asked for clarification and was directed to the Executive Director. She told me my application was fine and I was still in consideration. I asked her to keep me updated and to reach out if there were any questions about my qualifications or references. I never heard back, which was shocking given the unprofessionalism.
- Everyone on the two panels had their own questions, which weren't hard, almost like they googled 'Questions to ask at an interview'.
