Mechanical Engineering Intern
So, first I had a quick 15-minute chat with a recruiter, mostly just small talk about New Year's Resolutions because it was early January. Then, I jumped into a technical interview with two engineers. They really put my creative and technical skills to the test. I had to draw out some mechanism designs and explain how I'd tackle a physics problem. The whole thing took about an hour, but I struggled a bit with the second question, taking too long to figure it out. Unfortunately, I didn't get the internship, and they mentioned my technical ability on that physics question wasn't quite there yet.

Mechanical Engineer
I applied through a recruitment agency and went directly to the first interview. The interview had two parts: first, a chat with HR about the company and my goals; second, two back-to-back technical interviews. These technical interviews were tough but manageable with some help from the interviewers. The questions felt like standard ones for the company, focusing on graduate-level knowledge (like equations of motion, friction, inertia, etc.). Even though I learned this stuff, my nearly 10 years of commercial experience in different areas means I don't recall it as well. So, the technical questions didn't really test my current abilities. My advice, if this is their process, is to brush up on 3rd/4th year university mechanical engineering topics, even for experienced roles.

Mechanical Engineer
My interview process began with an online technical assessment. This was followed by a 30-minute online Teams call with HR where we discussed my background, the role, and my qualifications. After that, I was invited for an in-person technical interview that was scheduled for 2.5 hours but ran a bit longer, around 3.25 hours. It started with a site tour led by HR, then I had a 1.1 technical interview for an hour, followed by a short break, and then another 1.1 technical interview. Each technical interview included two questions: one theory-based and one design-based. Although I didn't get past this stage, I was informed that there would be a final round to meet the team/department heads to assess cultural fit. Honestly, I felt that was a bit much, especially after spending so long there; they could have either combined it or done it in one trip. The technical interviewers were really good, though, making it feel more like a discussion and offering help when I struggled, which was a nice change from interviews where it feels like they're just waiting for you to make a mistake.
