Graduate Engineer
It was very technical, with three 1-hour one-on-one interviews. They went through my CV, focusing on technical projects or asking standard technical questions like how a dishwasher works or the bathtub emptying problem. The answers needed a lot of academic knowledge, recalling principles like Navier-Stokes, Moody charts, Bernoulli, and Electro-thermodynamics. They were looking for high-level science, diving into the math and asking to solve problems or find equations for behaviors. It felt like a tough university interview for 2nd or 3rd year students, focused purely on technical ability, not work experience or education. The next stage was supposed to be HR.
- Could you explain the fundamental thermodynamics of a Fuel Cell?
- Using equations, can you describe the process of a bathtub emptying? And what would happen if a hose was added to the drain?
- How does a dishwasher operate?
Graduate Engineer
I reached out to the recruiters because I couldn't find a specific role that fit my background and what I was looking for. They mentioned they hire based on talent, not just specific openings, so I submitted an online application through their speculative portal. Within a week, I heard back from two teams who were interested and wanted to invite me for a face-to-face interview day at their Cambridge office. I started around 12:30 PM. First, I had a 30-minute chat with someone from HR who explained all about the company, and I got to ask questions. Then, I had an hour-long interview with someone from the first team. After a brief 10-minute lunch, I had another hour-long interview with someone from a different team. Following a short break, I had two more technical interviews with individuals from those same two teams. The day wrapped up around 5 PM. The interviewers were really nice and happy to answer any questions I had; it was all one-on-one and felt very personal.

Graduate Engineer
It was a really long interview process. The two departments I was interviewing with each wanted two interviews, so I ended up with four straight hours of technical interviews. They asked first-principles questions covering a really wide range of topics. I wasn't really ready for such an intense afternoon, and I felt like my performance was impacted by being nervous at the start and getting mentally exhausted by the end. The interviewers were nice, and they even provided lunch. I got a really good vibe about the company as a place to work, but the process itself was super intense.
