Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Research Assistant
I first had a chat with my PI about my background. A couple of weeks later, I had to give a presentation to some other PIs about my Thesis. That presentation was about an hour and a half long.
- Can you discuss your previous experience?
- What technical knowledge do you possess?
Research Assistant
The whole interview thing was pretty basic. HR sent my application from the career website to the PI of the lab I was applying for. The first phone interview was straightforward. They asked me about my background, my experience with lab procedures, and my goals. The in-person interview was a bit more nerve-wracking. Since I lived out of state, they flew me out to Columbus. The next morning, I met with current lab members and then an associate professor who works with the lab. Finally, I met with the lab PI. He asked me about my background again, why I wanted to join his lab, what I could bring to the team, and the big question about moving to Ohio. It was a good experience overall, but I didn't get the job.
- Can you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses? What kind of lab environment do you prefer? What are your goals for the next five years? What are your short-term and long-term career aspirations?
- Why are you interested in research? More specifically, why are you interested in the research being done in our lab?
- Why do you want to work in this particular lab?
Research Assistant
It was a pretty standard interview, mostly talking about science classes I took and my past research project experiences. I mainly focused on discussing what I learned from my coursework.
- What lab protocols are you familiar with?
- Could you tell me about your previous research project experience?
- What knowledge have you gained from your coursework?
