Merchandising Manager
the process had 3 steps: HR interview, Hiring Manager interview, and a Business case interview. Overall the hiring team managed the process professionally and with respect.
- Can you discuss current and future trends in the outdoor industry?
- What are your thoughts on the current North Face product selection?
- How do you evaluate the in-store execution of merchandising strategies?
Assistant Manager
I sent in my application online and got a call back the very next day. They asked about when I'm free and then set up an interview. During the interview, they asked a bit about what interests me and why I picked this company, plus what I already knew about it.
- Tell me about your leadership style.
- Describe a time you dealt with a difficult customer.
- What methods do you use for loss prevention?
Assistant Manager
I was first contacted by a recruiter from REI because they saw my application online. She emailed me to set up a phone interview for early April. I scheduled it for a few days later and we spoke for about 30 minutes about my experience and the job. A few days after that, she set up an interview for me with the store manager for the following week. We met for about an hour and discussed my current job, what the company expects, and the job description in detail. I thought this went really well. The next day, the recruiter called to schedule another interview with the district manager. I went back to the store a week later for this one. We covered similar topics, but I didn't feel as comfortable with the DM because he seemed a bit distant sometimes. This interview lasted about 40 minutes. A few days later, the recruiter called again to let me know I needed to complete the background check part of the application. Their system was down, so I had to print out a form they emailed and fax it. I was told the store manager and district manager were out of town for a week for meetings and a decision would be made after they returned. A week later, I was told the store manager was back, but the district manager had to leave again unexpectedly, delaying things. I never heard back from North Face, which was really disappointing considering the time and effort I put in. I felt I deserved at least a call. My application stayed pending online for several more weeks before it was eventually removed. My original timeline estimate was based on when I was contacted versus when they said I'd hear back, but it ended up taking much longer.
- How can you tell if a candidate is a good fit for your store during an interview?
- What actions do you take to boost sales each day?
