A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn after seeing my profile and published writing, thinking I'd be a good fit. We had a good phone chat, and then they asked me to write a new, original review that showed my voice and matched the style of their sites. I spent a lot of time studying their format, style, and voice before submitting a 1,500-word review in The Infatuation's exact voice and format. The recruiter then contacted me and, in a very unfriendly way, said the review wasn't what they wanted and didn't show the company voice, even though I'd carefully reviewed and matched it. It's weird because they reached out to me, and I wasn't even looking for a job. They also didn't offer specific feedback on their picky company tone for my writing sample. The negative feedback felt harsh and unwarranted, especially since they initiated contact. It was a really odd interview process that went from warm to cold very fast and aggressively, making me wonder how their editorial team operates.

I applied online and heard back in about three days. A recruiter asked me to do a writing assessment. I submitted three micro-reviews within three business days. About seven business days later, I got an automated message saying I didn't move forward. This was the first time I had to do a writing assessment without an interview. The recruiter was professional and gave me feedback when I asked, but the process felt impersonal and extractive. I'm thankful for the opportunity to apply and wish the team luck.

First, I had to submit 3 restaurant reviews. After that, there was a phone interview. Even though I moved on, the whole process felt really impersonal and scripted, and I couldn't tell what the hiring manager was looking for.
