First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Hartford.
Software Engineer
First step was screening. 2nd round: Interviewed with a manager and a team member, lots of cloud questions and API design. 3rd round: Interviewed with other managers, asked about resume projects. Got rejected via automated email, was expecting a personalized one from the recruiter.
- Can you design an API in any programming language?
- How would you get your servers ready for a sudden surge in traffic, like on Black Friday for an e-commerce site?
- Tell me about your experience with cloud technologies.
Software Engineer
So I had this initial call with the recruiter, then a pretty intense technical interview with two people from the team. It was an hour long and super in-depth, felt like they were really grilling me the whole time, way more than other places. They asked a bunch of stuff about debugging and fixing performance problems, like how to avoid deadlocks. I never heard back from Hartford after that, even though my application still says pending and the job is still listed. Honestly, after that experience, I'm not sure I'd want to work there anyway.
- Can you explain how to prevent an AWS lambda function from experiencing cold starts?
- Given a slow-running web application, what steps would you take to diagnose and resolve the performance issues?
Software Developer
The interview process was good and very professional. It's highly recommended for experienced candidates. It was conducted over Skype and had four rounds, with salary negotiations happening first. The roles were described well. There were three technical rounds and one managerial round. HR reviews occurred at the beginning. All interviews were no more than 40 minutes. The position was location-specific, and visa transfers were offered. Communication was consistently very good.
- If a job offer were extended, what would be your earliest possible start date?
