First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Hartford.
Data Engineer
The interview was an hour, split into two parts. The first half was talking with HR about my background, motivations, and past projects. The second half was a technical chat with a senior engineer. No live coding, but a deep dive into my resume projects and some high-level system design concepts.
- Can you explain the difference between tuples and lists?
Data Engineer
First, I had a call with HR to discuss the role and my qualifications. They asked about my job and what I do, and if I had the relevant skills, which I do. They also asked why I wanted this job. The second round was a Tech Interview, which was behavioral/technical. No white boarding was involved. It seemed like they were looking for someone that could explain themselves clearly.
- Can you describe a data pipeline and walk me through how it works?
- Could you explain different types of joins, their use cases, and scenarios?
- What do you consider the best approach for optimizing SQL queries?
Data Engineer
I sent in my profile online and got a call back in 3 days to set up a phone interview. There were 3 people on the panel, and it was all technical, focused on my past experience. Two days later, a recruiter called to set up an in-person interview. It felt really positive. Again, there were 3 people, and they asked general and technical questions, all related to my past experience. I felt like they were very interested in me, and I answered every question well. A week later, the recruiter emailed to say they were going with another candidate. I'm not sure what went wrong; if they had concerns about my experience length, they shouldn't have proceeded with the in-person interview. Overall, the in-person interview was a good experience, but I'm a bit disappointed with the outcome.
- Could you elaborate on your last project and how you handled data ingestion?
- Can you provide details about your previous work experience?
- What can you tell me about the projects you've worked on previously?
