First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The General.
Software Engineer
First, there was a 30-minute HR screening call where they asked typical HR-y behavioral questions. Then, a 1-hour video call happened with three software engineers from the team, including the team manager. This was mostly behavioral or hypothetical questions, no live-coding. They looked at one of my projects and asked about it. They also asked about my experience with web development and programming languages.
- How do you approach writing reusable CSS?
Machine Learning Engineer
It took over three months. First, there were two technical 1-on-1 phone screens. Then, I had 3 interviews via video conference. Finally, there was an onsite with 3 rounds. The interviewers were nice. However, the company does not sponsor H1-B visas. If you need sponsorship, this job is not for you. What I disliked was being told I was the only candidate being interviewed for two months, only to find out they hired an internal candidate because they know their tools. Why waste my time? Luckily, I prepared well and got a better offer later.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
- Tell me about your experience with Spring.
- What are some key concepts in Machine Learning?
Claims
This was the worst in-person interview experience I've ever had. We did two group interviews with different departments and managers. They asked standard corporate questions that didn't lead to good conversation. The HR rep didn't tell me about the process or that I'd have two sets of interviews. A week later, the HR rep called, was unprofessional, and said I wasn't qualified and they thought I wasn't interested. The next day, they offered me the job, but I turned it down because of how I was treated. Why would I take a job there if that's how they treat their employees? The HR rep should be fired for being so unprofessional.
- What is a weakness you have?
- Tell us about a time you had to deal with conflict?
Claims Handler
I applied and got a call for a phone interview within days. That phone interview was about 20-30 minutes long. They said I'd hear back in two weeks about an in-person interview, but I heard back in two days and scheduled one for the next day. The in-person interview went really well, lasted a good while, and I met two nice, knowledgeable claims managers. Right after that, I chatted with the branch manager for about 10 minutes to wrap up any questions. I got the offer three days later from the branch manager.
- Can you share an instance where you had to inform all involved parties about shared liability, and describe how you communicated the ultimate decision?
