I arrived 10 minutes early and asked for the manager's office. Someone directed me after they finished with a customer. I waited outside the office for a bit. The manager was on an important call and it took 10 minutes for her to finish, so our interview started later than planned. I looked around the store for 10 minutes and then returned. We spoke in her office for a while. She was concerned because I had no prior retail or customer service experience. We walked through the section I would be working in. She emphasized the importance of being warm and friendly with customers. I didn't have many questions because it seemed very straightforward, especially coming from several years as an elementary teacher. She said she would call if I got the job, and then I left. I never heard back.

The interview process was quite straightforward and brief. It involved some common questions that I've encountered before, like explaining my background and my motivation for joining the company. A background check is also required.

The hiring manager for the Cheese Specialist position seemed very confrontational from the start. When I explained my interest in Fresh Market, she questioned my lack of cheese knowledge and passion. She then asked about my college enrollment and expressed doubt about my ability to balance full-time work and studies, despite my academic success and current full-time employment. She also implied scheduling inflexibility when I inquired about needing two days off per week for classes. It became clear that this role and manager were not a good fit for me. She made several rude remarks before asking about my pay expectations, which I stated as $11-$12/hr based on my research for similar roles and my existing experience. She reacted with laughter and challenged my expectations, especially after I mentioned my current $15/hr wage.
