First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Container Store.
Visual Merchandiser
First, there was a 15 minute phone chat where they screened me by asking about my past work and why I wanted to work at The Conatiner Store. Then the manager told me more about the job and confirmed I wanted to keep going. After that, we set up a 30-60 minute face-to-face interview at the store. Before the interview, I had to look at the company's 7 foundational principles on their website and get ready to talk about them. I watched 7 short videos about each principle and we discussed them during the interview. The manager spent a good amount of time talking about what makes The Container Store a great place to work and how the principles are reflected in everything they do. Finally, we talked about the next steps for a job offer and when I could start.
- What makes you want to join The Container Store?
- Can you share your thoughts on The Container Store's 7 foundational principles?

After applying, I got a call within a few days for a quick chat and a group interview. They gave me a 'homework assignment': find a disorganized area at home and a Container Store item that could fix it, then bring a picture. At the group interview, the manager talked about working there and showed videos on their Foundation Principles. After each video, she asked for our thoughts, which was a bit awkward since we sometimes talked over each other, but we managed. Then we presented our 'homework' and filled out availability forms. The next day, I got an email about a background check. A few days later, I was called for a one-on-one interview where they confirmed my availability, asked me to introduce myself, asked more about my availability again, and if I had any questions. This last interview was super short.
- How did you feel about the videos and the company's Foundation Principles?
- Can you confirm your availability?
- Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I applied to The Container Store and initially they said they weren't hiring but would keep my application. About a month later, they reached out asking if I was interested in an early morning truck shift, which I was. I was then invited to a group interview. They asked me to bring a picture of one of their products that would help me solve an organizational challenge in my home. There were about 9 of us, and 2 managers led the interview. We sat in two rows in a semi-circle facing a TV in the middle of the store. It wasn't awkward. First, we introduced ourselves. Then, the managers read off a paper describing the position, and we watched a video about a typical day for a visuals merchandiser. After the video, we were asked to share our thoughts on it and then discuss our home organizational challenges. There were no personal questions. We only watched one video and were asked a few other questions. The interview lasted about 45 minutes. That was it! They asked for our availability and we left. I got a call with an offer exactly one week later.
- Can you introduce yourself and tell us one fun fact?
- What is your description of our store?
- Amy is commenting about the video?
