Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Cheesecake Factory.
Manager
It was a two-step interview. First, a phone call, then an 'ado' interview where I met the general manager at the location. It was moderately difficult, requiring knowledge of restaurant operations and functions, given the very hectic work environment and high sales.
- Can you describe your previous restaurant experience?
- Could you share some details about your personal background?
Restaurant Manager
First, there's an online test to filter out folks without at least 5 years of full-service experience. Then, you'll do an online personality test and a business assessment with math and logic problems. A recruiter will call to make sure you're applying for the right reasons (not just for money) and will double-check your answers from the test. Next, you'll have an in-person interview with the GM, followed by about 4-5 hours shadowing a floor manager. During this time, you'll be hands-on, seating guests, interacting with staff, and asking questions. The GM assumes you're qualified at this point and is mainly checking your professionalism and personality. Finally, you'll interview with an area director. This is where the tough questions come in – they'll ask about your P&L experience, financial knowledge, HR scenarios, and what your staff would say about you. If the area director likes you, a recruiter will reach out to discuss salary.
- The questions weren't tough. Just make sure your answers and reasonings are consistent.
Restaurant Manager
You start with an online assessment, which takes about an hour to an hour and a half. After that, a recruiter will give you a call for a 30-minute phone interview. The next step is an interview with the Area Director. Then, you'll visit a restaurant for a few hours to see what a typical day is like and chat with the current managers.
- Can you share your past experience?
- How would you handle a specific situation?
- Where do you enjoy dining out the most?
