First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Capital Grille.
Host
It was a mass interview, kind of like a machine, so don't get overwhelmed if it feels like you are walking into something grand. Dress to impress. After working at the job for a while, my employers said that dressing in a suit really added to their perception of me before even speaking to me. I was first met at a check-in, then taken back to a table with the lead of the team I was applying for: the host lead. Once the host lead determined she liked me, she sent over the managing partner. At this location, I applied for the opening of the restaurant, so I was offered the job on the spot. I am unsure if the managers offer a job on the spot in a typical interview.
- How would you handle a situation where a guest approaches you with a complaint or concern?
Bartender
I showed up on time for my interview and had to wait 10 minutes for the manager. No greeting or anything. Then I had to meet another manager, and nobody told me there would be more than one. It felt more like an interrogation than an interview, super awkward and uncomfortable. This place is way too serious, like a military place, not a restaurant. I have a lot of experience in hospitality, and I've never felt so scrutinized or intimidated. I guess it was a mistake to even think about this corporate, soulless place, Darden. I'm glad I know now not to consider any of their chains. 1/10, would never do this again.
- What makes you the best candidate for this position?
Food Server
Filled out a standard computer application. Then had an interview with a manager who seemed disinterested because many servers quit. They had an orientation where the partner seemed annoyed. They say it's a year-round job, but you only make money in November-January, which feels unfair. The staff meal is also bad, usually pasta with sausage, meatballs, or fried chicken fingers, sometimes burgers.
- Do you have knowledge of wines?
- Are you familiar with different cuts of meat?
- What is your knowledge of cocktails?
Server
It was a business casual interview held in a private dining room. They asked questions about introducing myself, my strengths and weaknesses, and my wine knowledge. Basically, it was a standard interview, just make sure to highlight your hospitality skills and show you know fine dining.
- Can you introduce yourself and discuss your future aspirations?
- What are your key strengths and areas for development?
- Could you elaborate on your wine knowledge?
