First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Boring Company.
Software Engineer
The interview process was quite professional. It started with a recruiter screening call, which was a good sign that they invest time in speaking with candidates before technical assessments. After that, I had two 30-minute audio calls with engineers on the team, followed by a conversation with the lead engineer. Then came a 2-hour take-home skills test that was interesting and not too hard. All the interviewers really dug into my previous relevant work. The next step was a 30-minute, audio-only technical interview, which felt a bit odd and didn't really show what I can do. The interviewer gave me a problem verbally. He initially dismissed my first idea, but later revealed it was the actual solution. My second suggestion was actually better, though I'm not sure he got it. Right after that, I spoke with the director of engineering, who really questioned me about my past projects and then gave me plenty of time to ask my own questions. Sadly, they felt my experience wasn't strong enough and went with someone else. I guess 12 years of experience at average companies doesn't make you a better engineer; talent matters more. Hopefully, I'll get to work with A-players someday. Good luck to them!
- Can you describe a project that you managed from start to finish?
- Tell me about a project you owned end to end.
Recruiter
The interview process started with a phone screen with a recruiter, followed by an online interview with the head of talent acquisition. Then there were six individual interviews onsite, totaling about 3 hours. These onsite interviews were with 5 recruiters and 1 engineering lead. The whole process took about 4 hours of my time, excluding travel. It's been over 3 weeks and I still haven't heard anything back, which is really disappointing.
- Can you share an instance where you used creativity to successfully close a candidate?
Backend Engineer
Recruiter emailed me about a new grad Backend Engineer position. The first round was a 30-minute phone call with the recruiter for an initial screening. The second round was a take-home assessment that needed to be completed within 4 hours and included one coding question and one design question about physics and car acceleration.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What is your past experience?
- What are you most proud of achieving?
Coordinator
The interview process started off pretty normal and was actually really pleasant for the first 3 rounds. But then it just kept going and ended up being a total of 12 interviews. By the 11th one, I was told I'd get an offer, but that got put on hold for 4 days because they wanted to do one more interview. It really felt like the interviewers didn't talk to each other because I got asked the same 3 questions by almost everyone. Plus, they were late to every single interview, or had to reschedule after I'd already waited 15 minutes on the call. Overall, it felt disorganized and unmotivated, which is weird for a company that claims to be innovative.
- In what ways can you contribute to making a difference?
