First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Texas De Brazil.
Hostess
You'll talk with the manager, and they'll want to know about your past work experience and your schedule. Since it's a restaurant, they really care about your weekend availability. If you seem presentable and can work most of the time, you'll probably get the job.
- Can you tell me about your availability during the week and on weekends?
Hostess
I applied in person, and about a week later, the general manager called to set up an interview for the next day. Since Texas de Brazil is a bit upscale, I dressed nicely and put on makeup. The interview with the general manager was really quick, probably five minutes or less.
- Given that hostesses also serve as wine angels here, would you be comfortable taking on that role?
- We noticed you're friends with a current employee; how would you describe that relationship?
Server
I saw the job posting on Craigslist and came in for my interview. I had to fill out an application and take a written test about spirits knowledge, which included naming different types of scotches, wines, cordials, and gins. After handing in the application and test, a manager interviewed me briefly on the spot, asking about my experience and if I could push wine sales, as that was an area needing improvement. Then, I was given a script called "The Brazilian Story" to memorize and present the next day as if I were greeting a table. I did this presentation, and after it was over, they gave me a uniform and told me to start the next day. I decided not to accept the offer because the required robotic memorization and the highly structured environment suggested by the application made me feel it wouldn't be a good fit, especially since there was very little actual interaction during the interviews.
- Can you name five single malt scotches?
- How about four blended scotches?
- And can you list five gins?
Bartender
I arrived and asked to see the manager. They had me complete an application and then interviewed me right then and there, before their dinner service started. It took a bit for them to let me in.
- What is your bartending experience duration?
