The process began at a job fair where Tellabs was recruiting. While the hiring managers I'd end up working with weren't there (it was a Saturday), I spoke to a manager from a different team. He suggested I'd be a better fit for another team and took my resume to pass along to the appropriate hiring manager. After about two weeks and some follow-up, one of the hiring managers called me for a phone screen. Even though I wouldn't report to her, she led the interview process because my actual manager was on leave. The phone screen was followed by an in-person interview scheduled for the next week. Once that was done, the manager I would report to called me as a follow-up.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

The interview process mostly included in-depth phone chats with the hiring manager (about 90 minutes), two chats with team members (about 30 minutes each), and one chat with someone from sales (about 30 minutes). There was also a casual 30-minute face-to-face chat in a lab with one of the people I spoke with on the phone. It was sometimes unclear what the next steps were or inconsistent with what I was told.

The first interview was a phone call with HR, covering standard questions about my interest in the role, my background, and my skills. The second interview was with the team and involved behavioral, skills, and experience questions. The final interview was with a director who asked more behavioral questions.

Technical Coding

I interviewed with 7 people. It was mostly professional, but a few interviewers were too theoretical and seemed to have big egos. None of them seemed very enthusiastic about the company.
