Data Scientist
It was a long process, with 4 interviews. Started with a short SQL query to be submitted in 30 minutes, followed by a 2-hour challenge involving SQL and analyzing provided tables with a tool of my choice. Next, I had an interview with the data manager where I was asked to explain a p-value to stakeholders. The final stage was a panel interview with 4 people, surprisingly no mention of the data challenge, they just asked statistics questions like calculating the probability of coin tosses. The process felt like it assessed theoretical statistics knowledge rather than actual skills, which was very frustrating given the time commitment over a month.
- Can you explain what a p-value is to people who aren't data experts?
- What's the chance of getting tails three times in a row when flipping a coin?
- Given two dice numbered 1-6, what are the odds of rolling a sum of 8?

I had an initial phone screen with HR where they asked about my resume. They then gave me a list of fresh openings. The HR rep was really nice and even advocated for me with the hiring managers, which was the best part of the whole process. I picked three openings I was interested in, and the HR person sent my resume for my top choice to the hiring manager. They contacted me and set up the first round, which was a technical interview where I had to write SQL queries. I had mentioned in my cover letter that I didn't have SQL experience, and when I reminded them and asked if I could look up syntax or get help, they just told me to do my best. So, I basically just sat there for 30 minutes. After that, the HR rep emailed me saying they weren't moving forward with my application. I replied asking if I could do the third stage, a technical interview focusing on my actual data science skills instead of just database queries. The HR rep said we'd do a rebuttal, but then they stopped responding to my messages about scheduling it. It's pretty obvious Teladoc isn't flexible in their hiring; they're looking for a unicorn who will work for cheap. Honestly, I'm glad it worked out this way because if this is how they treat their employees, no one should want to work there. It's a really risky way for a company with such a dominant position in telehealth to behave.
- Can you design a SQL query to extract and filter health information from a database that stores wearable device measurements?

HR reached out on LinkedIn and set up a call with the hiring manager (Sr. Director) and another Manager. They wanted to know my reasons for seeking a new role and asked some basic SQL questions. I was interested in learning about their current Growth Analytics projects, but the hiring manager didn't provide details. I asked about the potential title and salary before proceeding. Following another conversation with HR, they made a low offer for both salary and title. It seemed like their work wasn't very exciting, so I decided not to continue. The HR process was very quick, open, and responsive.
- Can you explain why you are looking for a new position?
- Could you write a SQL query using a WHERE clause?
- Can you construct a SQL query with both a WHERE and a HAVING clause?
