I interviewed directly with the group head, which felt very personal and meaningful. The chat was about 30 mins and pretty laid-back and friendly. Most questions were pretty standard, the kind you'd expect when prepping for common interview questions, asking about my background, motivations, and how I generally approach problems. I also used the opportunity to introduce myself more thoroughly, talk about my experience, and highlight what I could contribute to the team. All in all, it was a good and easy interaction.

It was a 3-step process. First, a casual chat with the lab head to see if we'd vibe. Then, a more formal sit-down with the lab head about why I wanted the job and what I expected. The last step involved me presenting some of my past work (like 8 examples) and sharing my thoughts on how to tackle two specific problems the lab was dealing with. I got the offer and accepted, but then the HR side of things was a mess - barely any info on starting, they got my salary wrong, didn't help with my work permit visa, and then ghosted my contract signing. Total headache.

There were long organizational lead times and follow-up times due to the slow administrative organization. The interview itself was very structured and focused on personal motivation and willingness to perform. We spontaneously switched to English conversation to test my language skills and conversational abilities.
