Store Manager
The hiring process started with an email from an area manager setting up an hour-long meeting. We discussed Teavana's history, the acquisition, and the resulting changes. She asked about my personal connection to tea and its significance in my life, along with general performance-based questions. Specific behavioral questions included detailing a difficult conversation with a team member and how I handled it. This initial meeting went very well. The second stage was a phone interview with a senior recruiter who was very friendly. We talked more about Teavana, benefits in greater detail, and compensation. She also inquired about the size of teams I've managed and store volume. This interview was relaxed and natural. A third interview is scheduled for next Saturday with another area manager and the regional director.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to have a difficult conversation with a team member?
- What strategies do you employ to keep your team motivated?
- How do you go about recruiting top talent for your store?
Store Manager
So basically I got contacted by HR via email and phone to set up this initial phone interview. It went pretty well, and then I got a 1:1 with my potential boss. I was kinda early, but they were running late. After waiting 20 mins, I just left, thinking they were disorganized or something. Then, like 5 mins later, they called saying they got lost and still wanted to meet. We found a new spot and talked for about an hour. I didn't know much about Teavana's sales strategy, which is very top-down. I'm not a fan of being pushy or that model, and I told them. They explained their view, but I still wasn't sold. They have this super specific sales process they want everyone to use, so if you're applying for management, you gotta be able to talk about leading a team to hit sales targets. If you're not gonna follow their way, don't bother, they'll think you're not a team player. Also, be ready to talk about how to sell expensive stuff in a bad economy and why their product is worth it. The interviewer liked that I knew my stuff about the company, even though I hadn't been to a store. They said I'd hear back in a week, but it took two weeks with no word, so I figured I didn't get it. Then about a month later, I got a generic rejection email. Honestly, after talking to HR a bunch, I expected a personal call, not just a form email.
- How do you feel about adhering to a defined sales process and employing a top-down sales approach with all customers?
- Regarding your sales experience, how do you approach sales if your method differs from a top-down model?
Store Manager
Interviews for store manager roles happen way in advance, like 3 months or more before the store even opens. They really like to promote from within the company. You might talk to the Area Manager, or the VP of HR, or even both of them. First, you gotta do this online thing that needs to be totally filled out before they'll even give you a verbal interview. If you pass that, they'll set up a one-on-one meeting with you in person. They're super focused on sales, so they're not looking for store managers who are all about operations.
- Can you share an instance where you were accused of unethical behavior? Describe the situation, your reaction, and the outcome.
