Behavioral Presentation Technical

I had a short phone interview with the hiring manager. It was less about my skills and more about the company and position needs. I was told I'd do a software presentation to customers, focusing on sales and presentation skills, not just technical knowledge. Some current team members struggled with this demo. The first of three 1:1 interviews was with the group manager, who talked a lot about the job and company. The second 1:1 had better back-and-forth about the role and team. The third was with a seasoned sales professional who asked broad questions like 'Why Sales?', testing my sales ability. The software demo, contrary to initial understanding, was very button-focused. I had prepared for concepts and value, not specific software steps, and felt unprepared. I should have spent more time on tutorials but had limited time for prep. I didn't get the job, with feedback that my demo skills weren't strong enough.

I applied online after seeing a LinkedIn job opening that caught my eye. The recruiter seemed nice at first. Even though I seemed like a long shot for the role, she started questioning me about my lack of job opportunities in the Seattle area due to my age. I decided to end the interview early and say goodbye as I started to tear up. As someone in recruiting, I would never treat a candidate that way. I might suggest other internal or external job options, but I wouldn't tell someone they're unemployable at 45 without knowing them personally. I might say they're 'a stretch for a role and we'll get back to you,' but that wasn't the experience I had. I don't think a recruiter has ever made me cry before during an interview, and I hope I haven't done that to anyone else. I think she meant well, but her delivery was poor and completely unnecessary. Seattle is a small place.

Behavioral Technical Other

Got referred in. First up was a screening with the recruiter. Then, I met the hiring manager in person. After that, I chatted with some other team members, both in person and over the phone. Later, I spoke with some important leaders from different departments, again in person or by phone. Finally, I got an offer and we talked salary. Bonus and stock options are standard for my level. I started about two weeks after accepting.
