Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tableau Software.
Sales Manager
The interview involved several stages, culminating in a software demo where I had to sell the team's Tableau software. I dedicated over 20 hours of my free time to prepare, as the hiring manager mentioned 90% of candidates fail this part. On the scheduled day, the hiring manager didn't show up, and HR was unsure until the last minute if he would join the web-ex. No apology was ever offered. Despite this, three other people were present, and they seemed eager to conclude the process quickly, likely due to the high failure rate. During my demo, one panelist interrupted with a technical question I couldn't answer immediately, and she advised me to move on quickly, stating I shouldn't waste her time. When I requested feedback, she initially declined, citing a lack of time, but eventually provided only negative feedback, focusing on my perceived lack of control over the meeting and time spent correcting an error. Her attitude felt hostile, and I was surprised by the apparent lack of interest in learning about me. The following day, I requested feedback from the hiring manager, who was supposed to review the recording, but I received an automated rejection email a week later. It appears that failing the demo leads to immediate dismissal without further engagement. This experience suggests a company culture that may not be supportive or friendly, and I recommend being thoroughly prepared for the demo, anticipating potential issues, and not assuming good intentions from the interviewers.
- Can you show me where there is negative profit?
Sales Manager
The recruiter reached out the same day I applied via email to schedule a phone interview. It was a straightforward review of my resume and relevant experience to determine if I was a good fit. She also provided information on the interview process, first-year training, and general benefits.
- Can you tell me about your quota attainment from last year?
Sales Manager
The entire process was extremely long and repetitive. Often the interviewers did not go through the CV and made presumptions by just skimming through it. One interviewer (third round) was SEVENTY FIVE mins late and did not apologize. He did not even go through my CV and started asking very basic questions such as - where did you work for a particular employer? which he should have already known since it was all in my CV. He kept asked 1 question for 8 mins over and over again to a point where I had to say that "as I mentioned before". Very condescending interviewer - reflects very poorly on the organisation. I was asked to do the Role play presentation - they said I was not proficient enough in Tableau when the recruiter had mentioned that you only need to show your sales skills and we do not expect you to know everything about Tableau. The same guy was very rude during the Role play, I have been working for very big brands but have never met such self-absorbed and condescending interviewers. SIX rounds and absolutely pathetic experience and honestly, a bullet dodged.
