First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tableau Software.
Customer Success Manager
I went in for a Customer Success interview day. They had a bunch of people applying, with appointments every 30 minutes and they really stuck to the schedule, which was cool. I talked to a recruiter for 30 mins, then a customer success manager, then another manager and finally a director. That's 4 different people, 30 minutes each, and they asked a bunch of questions. Two days later (Friday), I got an email saying they wanted to set up a demo. We scheduled it for that Monday. I went into the office and did a presentation acting like I was already part of Tableau and presenting to a company that wanted to use Tableau. They know you're not gonna be an expert yet and they just wanna see how you deal with questions and learn their software. They contacted my references and sent them email questionnaires (my contacts told me when they each got one). On Thursday, I got a call with the official offer, and I accepted the next day!

- Can you tell me about someone who has challenged you?
- Describe a time when someone coached you professionally.
Customer Success Manager
The interview process involved a phone screen with the recruiter, followed by a phone interview with the hiring manager. After that, there was an interview loop with 4-5 team members which also included a product demo. I felt like I didn't get asked challenging questions specific to the role, instead, it was more personal preference questions. It seemed like they had already picked someone and were just going through the motions, possibly to meet recruitment metrics. This felt dishonest, especially since I have recruitment experience. I've interviewed at other tech companies where I was challenged and received offers because they were interested in how I'd handle tough customer situations. The Tableau interview didn't feel honest or fair, particularly the product demo which took a lot of prep time. If they had already decided, they should have just canceled the interview loop instead of making me prepare and go through it. The recruiter was nice but didn't give feedback, which I'd seen others mention. My advice to Tableau is to be upfront with candidates. Your treatment of interviewees shows your company's character. This experience will stick with me, and I'll likely decline future opportunities with them based on this. First impressions are crucial, especially in sales and customer service.
- Can you tell me what you're seeking in terms of company culture?
- What kind of team environment are you looking for?
- What is your driving force?
Customer Success Manager
The interview process started with a recruiter call, followed by an onsite interview at Tableau's office. This onsite involved a one-on-one with the hiring manager and another one-on-one with a future colleague. Initially, I had a very positive impression due to the welcoming and kind staff. However, I was very disappointed with how they handled things afterward, sending an automated email to inform me they wouldn't proceed. When I asked the recruiter for feedback, they stated they were too busy, which I found unprofessional given the time I invested in the interview. While Tableau seems like a great company, their post-interview communication needs improvement.
