Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at T&T Supermarket.
Cashier
The interview was really simple and straightforward. They mostly asked if I had any prior cashier or retail experience, and whether I could memorize PLU codes. No tricky questions or tests. As long as you show you're reliable and willing to learn, you should be fine. The whole process was quick, and I got the offer soon after.
- Could you memorize PLU codes and are you able to work in a fast-paced environment?
- They asked if I could memorize PLU codes and work in a fast-paced environment. That seemed to be the most important part of the job
Cashier
Got a call about the job in about a week and set up an interview with the manager for the next week (took about 4 weeks total to start working). Met the manager for a quick intro interview. Was asked to learn PLU codes for produce (not sure if still needed). After passing that, I was invited to sign the contract at T&T HQ in Richmond (this was in 2015). It was a 2-3 hour session with other new hires from different departments. Could choose English or Mandarin for a short training on T&T's history and background.
- Why do you want to work for T&T?
- What's your previous work experience?
- Memorize PLU codes for specific produce items.
Cashier
The HR asked me if my family supports me to be a cashier and I said 'not totally support'. So the HR said 'it's hard work for cashier, because you have to stand 8 hours a day, I don't think you can stand that long...'. Then she let me to be interviewed for an office position. When she asked me my salary expectation, I said '$15/hours', while, only '$10/hour' for the position, so I didn't get the offer, cause my expectation is high and they don't think I can stay there for long time.
- Given your background in office work and being a manager before moving to Canada, how do you see yourself as a cashier?
- Is your family supportive of you becoming a cashier?
- Do you have your family's support to work as a cashier?
