Sales Representative
I applied and got an interview pretty quickly, like within a few days. Then there were some online tests that took about half an hour. The main interview was around 45 minutes and covered the usual stuff.
- Can you share an instance when you had to handle an unhappy customer?
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
Sales Representative
I found the job on Glassdoor and applied through their site. A recruiter set me up for a virtual preliminary interview where I had to record myself answering questions. The next day, I got a 'problem solving and personality assessment'. After that, I was invited to interview with the hiring manager at a restaurant. The next step was supposed to be a panel interview with managers, and then maybe an offer. Sysco likes competitive and tenacious people who love recognition, according to the interviewer. The role pays 52k and you're expected to work 60-65 hours a week for the first few years, competing with coworkers. They give out vacation trips and trophies as incentives. You'll drive 300-500 miles a week on your own car, so definitely ask for a car allowance. My advice is to be real with yourself and the interviewer; don't lie, or you'll just waste everyone's time. I was curious about the offer package, but I knew I'd probably reject it since I left the food industry in 2019 to become a construction superintendent. Maybe he thought I wasn't competitive enough because I don't care about trophies. Anyway, it feels good to be done with Sysco.
- Can you tell me how much competition matters to you and share an instance where you were competitive?
- What led you to learn about this position?
- What are your reasons for wanting to join Sysco?
Sales Representative
Applied online, filled out some long forms. Got a phone screen pretty fast because I have 5+ years in hospitality management, which I figured made me pretty qualified, coming from the other side. The phone screen was pretty standard, really nice person, asked some basic personality questions. They set up my first in-person interview a few days later with the regional sales manager. We met about halfway, which was about an hour drive for me. They asked STAR questions, about basic sales stuff, and what I'd do in certain situations, nothing too hard or exciting. They mentioned if I got picked for a second interview, it'd be at the home office with several team leaders, and I'd know by the end of the week. I had to call at 5pm on Friday, no answer, so I left a message. Didn't hear back until Wednesday the next week, when they said more interviews got canceled and rescheduled, and I'd know by the end of that week. Had to call again at 5pm Friday, no answer, left another message. Sent an email on Monday, didn't get a reply until Thursday, asking me to come in for a second interview at the home office, scheduled for the middle of the next week. I drove 3.5 hours to the home office for a good meeting with HR, where we talked about pay, benefits, and they asked general questions like if I liked working there. Then I met with the VP of sales, where I made a strong case that my skills were good enough and I was dedicated to doing well. He literally said, 'well I think this went very well.' He said they'd make a decision and let me know middle of next week. Middle of next week came, and I got a super generic automated email saying they picked someone else. Basically, phone screen, face-to-face, waited forever, drove forever, had multiple interviews, got really good feedback, but still wasn't good enough. Felt like they were just stringing me along.
- Tell me about a time when...
- What is your knowledge of basic sales concepts?
- What would you do in this situation?
