First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SWA Group.
Designer
I applied on the company website and then chatted over email with someone from the office for a few weeks. The application asked for a cover letter, my portfolio, and a letter of interest, which is pretty standard for design jobs.
- Can you describe your design process?
Landscape Designer
It was an online interview with a principal, an associate, and a designer. We talked about my past experience, how I work, my skills, and what I think about current industry trends. It was a pretty relaxed vibe.
- Tell me about your experience at XXX (your graduate school).
Intern
The interview process was smooth. First, I presented two projects from my portfolio that best represent me. Then, the interviewer asked me questions about my work during my last internship. After a week, I received the offer from this firm.
- What software did you use for the drawings and what did you learn from your past project?
Landscape Architect
There were two interviewers who really seemed to take my experience into consideration, which was a bit surprising for a landscape architect role since it wasn't the usual BLA or MLA background. However, one of them was quite discouraging and skeptical. He really seemed to think it was a big problem that I didn't know Autocad yet, even though I was already skilled in Vectorworks and knew they had another junior designer who was learning Autocad. I ended up getting hired by a different company and picked up Autocad pretty quickly within a couple of months.
