Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Super Micro Computer, Inc. (Supermicro).
Program Manager
Went through two interviews for different roles. One didn't feel like a good fit seniority-wise. The other went okay, but the interviewer had concerns about my familiarity with some company-specific technical areas. They asked me to put together a 6-slide technical presentation on those topics over the weekend to assess my learning ability. I spent time learning and creating the presentation, which I submitted. I felt it should have been enough to move to the next round, but there was no follow-up, and I felt I wasted my personal time.
- Could you prepare a 6-slide technical presentation on some company-specific product details you're not familiar with, to show us you can learn it?
Program Manager
I had an internal referral and went through several rounds of interviews. I spoke with the hiring manager, the team, and upper management. After that, HR contacted me about the next steps.
- Can you tell me about your relevant past experience?
Program Manager
First, I had to complete a long form about my background which took about 15 minutes. Then, I had a second interview which wasn't one-on-one. I felt the managers weren't sure about the candidate profile they needed. They said I didn't have the required background and wasn't a good fit, but still invited me to the second interview. The interview environment was okay, and they were nice, but not very adaptable. They seemed to want very specific, short answers and didn't like explanations that were several sentences long. I think the managers need more training from HR. For example, they asked me "how did you get your green card?", which is not a suitable interview question. The interview was also cut short because the next meeting was already scheduled, even though I felt it wasn't truly over and I still had questions to ask.
- When a situation occurs, what actions would you take to resolve it? For a hint, the answer is two words.
- Can you tell me about how you obtained your green card? Was it through a family member?
