Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Super Micro Computer, Inc. (Supermicro).
Manufacturing Engineer
This was the worst interview experience ever. Three people showed up, and they expected the interview to be conducted in Mandarin, which seemed like nepotism. One interviewer left halfway through and never returned. The second interviewer was decent and explained the job and potential overtime honestly. The third interviewer was aggressive, calling my generation lazy for leaving on time to play video games or see friends instead of being dedicated to work. This is especially bad given they offer less pay than the San Jose tech average, and I'd leave if offered. This feels like typical Asian company work culture. I saw many production techs smoking during their break, which was telling. I was told to follow up with HR about a take-home assessment, but I won't be pursuing this job or company due to the experience and their stock crash in mid-2024. I hope Nvidia stops partnering with them.
- Would you be okay with working long hours, like 12-hour days and sometimes on weekends?
Production Engineer
After they looked over my resume, I had a phone chat with one of the directors. We talked about my background and some projects I'd done. They also told me about the role and the company. Then, I moved on to an in-person technical interview with a software engineer there.
- Could you debug the provided source code example?
Production Engineer
I had an on-site interview that lasted for 3 hours with four interviewers who came in one by one. The first person mainly asked me about my resume, and I elaborated on my experiences. The second interviewer tested my knowledge on basic electrical engineering topics. The third person shared some of their experiences and we had a casual chat. The last interviewer also asked about my professional knowledge and presented me with a few problems to explain. I felt comfortable throughout the interview, as the managers were friendly. It seemed they were looking for someone who is easy to work with, not necessarily the most professional. After three weeks, they informed me that they could not sponsor my H1B visa, which was surprising because I had mentioned my visa status during the phone interview and they didn't raise any concerns during the on-site process. This felt like a waste of time.
- What is an accomplishment that you are particularly proud of?
