Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Stripe.
Product Support Specialist
The interview started with a call with the Hiring Manager, who they said would be able to answer candidate questions that a recruiter couldn't. After that, I received a take-home assignment that had two parts: first, respond to a customer's question, and second, analyze data and propose ways to improve customer satisfaction. If successful, I moved on to a live assessment which involved preparing for and answering 1 SQL and 3 API questions. I spent a week studying different API response scenarios and how to troubleshoot them, thinking about potential customer issues and solutions. However, the actual assessment was surprisingly straightforward, focusing on finding and correcting errors in API calls by referencing Stripe's documentation, like changing 'us_dollar' to 'usd'. The interviewer insisted I show examples from the docs even when I knew the information. They seemed to prioritize finding information in the docs over problem-solving skills, which I found concerning and potentially explains poor CS reviews. The final exercise also pushed me to find exact examples in the docs rather than just implementing the solution myself. The live assessment interviewer was also unhelpful, seeming to deliberately confuse me, for example, by asking for the opposite of 'false' multiple times until I guessed 'true', even though I had already explained the logical answer.

Product Support Specialist
The HR team is really great – super fast, helpful, and kind. But honestly, if you have a degree and technical skills, stay away from this job. It's basically just customer service with a fancy title. The hiring process takes forever, and the interviewers (besides HR) were really rude. The technical interviewer seemed less experienced than me but acted super condescending. They made two big mistakes during the technical questions, and got upset when I pointed them out, even though the interview is supposed to be about spotting errors. The interview also doesn't actually test how you'd do the job. The last round was more behavioral and was fine. Seriously, don't waste your time if you have a product or tech background. This role is all about answering tickets all day for people having Stripe issues. It's seen as customer service in tech, so there's not much chance to move up. You should really check LinkedIn profiles of people in this role at Stripe to see what kind of people do this job.
- Can you share an instance where you utilized data within a project?

The interview process kicked off with a recruiter screening, followed by a take-home assignment. This assignment involved questions that required digging into Stripe's external product documentation to find answers. Next up was a technical interview focusing on Stripe's APIs and SQL. The process concluded with a behavioural interview with the hiring manager. I didn't make it past this point, so I'm not sure about any final rounds. Overall, the interview process felt well-organized. I was given info on what to expect and how to prepare, and the recruiter was usually available for questions and even provided feedback. My advice: study the company's products and materials, critical thinking is key, and if WLB is a concern, try to get clarity on work hours and overtime.
- Can you tell me about your experience handling projects?
- Describe initiatives you've led for process improvement.
- How do you manage and resolve disagreements with stakeholders?

“How would you troubleshoot a client who says they haven't received payment yet?”
Read reports →“Dear Stripe, we've noticed some weird stuff on our account: someone tried to buy things 33 times with different credit cards over 3 days. Some went through, and I used your report/refund to flag one. The cards were from the US, Canada, and Germany, but the shipping addresses were all identical. The emails were usually different, but all hotmail.com or live.com, and sometimes looked like nonsense. The orders were also bigger than usual, which made us suspicious. We checked your website advice, but do you have any more tips on how we can protect ourselves from this kind of fraud?”
