First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Stripe.
Frontend Engineer
It was a difficult process to schedule, with no available slots and several last-minute cancellations. The interviews themselves felt like interrogations due to the interviewers' silent and poker-faced demeanor. After receiving a rejection email, the feedback call was extremely generic, with them telling someone with 5+ years of HTML experience that they don't know HTML well, which was disappointing and a waste of time.
- Can you tell me about a project you're proud of?
Frontend Engineer
Started with a chat with the manager to get a feel for the team and role. Then there was a tech screen where I had to build a small UI component to match an example. The virtual onsite included: an algorithmic programming challenge with a financial problem, an in-depth chat with the manager about the team and culture fit questions, an 'integration' task involving programming API calls against Stripe's live servers needing error handling and data manipulation, a frontend system design for a Stripe page focusing on components, APIs, state, a11y, and future changes, and a bug squash where I had to fix a bug in an open-source repo. The whole thing took 4 weeks from start to offer.
- Could you build this UI component to match the example provided?
- Solve this algorithmic programming exercise related to finance.
- Write code to program API calls against real Stripe production servers, including error handling and data manipulation.
Front End Developer
The interview process started with an HR call, followed by four rounds. These rounds included live coding and a deep dive into a design. I was presented with an app to design and asked to discuss which parts I would break down. Some interviewers were pleasant and easy to talk to, while others seemed a bit annoyed with certain questions. All interviewers were male. When I asked about diversity, they responded positively, despite the lack of gender diversity in the interview panel. After completing all interviews, the recruiter stopped responding to my emails and I never received a rejection.
- Regarding the provided design, what aspects would you focus on, particularly those you prefer working with?
