First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Stripe.
Technical Account Manager
The interview process was lengthy and drawn out. I had to sign an NDA, but since I didn't get the job and it wasn't overly detailed, I'm sharing helpful info. Round 1 was a recruiter screen; the recruiter was friendly and seemed to be reading from a script but kept me updated. Round 2 was a technical test given 5 working days, involving Stripe APIs and a customer communication task using Python. Round 3 was a review of the technical assessment, focusing on Stripe Connect and financial APIs, and assessing my comfort with their APIs. Then there was a recruiter call about the next phase: panel interviews. This included chats with the hiring manager, a customer success team member, and another technical round. The manager focused on behavioral questions like handling tricky customers or delivering bad news, mentioning they liked answers fitting C-Cross functionally, A-Mistake and recovery, R-Tricky user. The Customer Success round was a role-play where I was a TAM with a demanding customer needing a fix for an unavailable integration and another bug. I had 5 mins to get details from the CS Manager, who was not very engaged. Standard behavioral questions followed, like benefiting customers. The technical round focused on Stripe APIs and SQL, with hints that full completion wasn't expected. API usage involved the API explorer tool. SQL had two parts: fixing broken queries and creating a new one using Group By and WHERE clauses. My time ran out, but they emphasized seeing my approach. The interviewer was helpful and engaging.
- Can you share an instance of making a mistake and how you rectified it?
- Looking back, how could you have handled a similar mistake better in the future?
- In your opinion, how should the relationship between Customer Success and a TAM be structured?
Technical Account Manager
The interview process was a bit unusual and didn't quite align with the job description, even though everyone I spoke with was great. The recruiter was particularly outstanding. I really prepped for this role, reading all the docs, trying out the APIs with Python and Java, understanding errors, and even building a mini project. I even brought my laptop to show what I learned. But none of that mattered. They weren't interested in what I knew. There was a role-playing part, some customer situational questions, a basic SQL task, a presentation, and a chat with the hiring manager. I mostly enjoyed the day, but it felt like a mismatch for a technical role. The feedback about 'not enough client-facing experience' was kind of insulting given my decade in technical consulting and account management.
- Could you complete a very basic SQL exercise?
- How would you handle a role-playing scenario?
- What would you do in various customer hypothetical situations?
Technical Account Manager
I applied online using LinkedIn quick apply. I heard back a few days later for a recruiter chat and scheduled a time. The recruiter was polite and explained the job and company details. They asked about my experience and suitability for the role. I got an email back quickly saying the TAM team rejected my application. The whole process was fast, but the recruiters seemed to be reading from a script and didn't really engage with my answers, just noting them down for the TAM team's review.
- What is your experience?
- Why are you a good fit for this role?
