Management
This was an awful, terrible, and hostile interview experience. I spoke with a male recruiter who seemed nice on the phone, but in person, he was angry, overly dominant, condescending, and patronizing. Before the interview, I was a big fan of the brand. He shared a lot of negative information about the company culture, including very high turnover, a generally crazy environment where most people don't last, and an insane pace due to owning many businesses. He described it as a sink or swim situation. This made me completely uninterested in continuing. It's a shame that my first impression of a company I loved was so negative. Also, the location is extremely remote and in a questionable area with warehouses, requiring a shuttle. The hours are long and the pay isn't great. It was the worst impression ever. I'd advise looking at LinkedIn to see how long people stay – it's not long at all. Major red flags!
- Can you tell me about yourself?
Assistant Manager
I applied online and then went to the store to introduce myself. The manager was super energetic and did a quick pre-screening right then and there. After we chatted, she set up an interview with me for later on.
- Can you tell me why you are interested in working for Steve Madden?
- What would be your approach to dealing with a very upset customer?
Assistant Manager
A friend referred me, then I filled out the online app. The next day I had a 1:1 with the Store Manager, very general about my background and retail job at the time. The next day was a phone interview with the District Manager. More in-depth management questions; very laid back. The next day, I got the offer and accepted.
