I applied online and then got invited for an on-site interview, which also included a plant tour. We toured the chemical plant, and after that, I went through rotating interviews with Technical Managers, Senior Engineers, the Recruiter, and Process Engineers. Everyone there was really nice and made me feel welcome.

I had an interview with Stepan and I was immediately put off by their deceptive approach to salary transparency. The job posting listed a salary range. However, when I spoke with the HR recruiter, I was told that the company was never actually willing to pay the upper end of that range and it was actually $16k less. They had inflated the maximum salary (as the recruiter said) "to avoid deterring applicants." This kind of bait-and-switch tactic raises serious concerns about the company’s integrity. If they are willing to mislead candidates right from the start, what else might they be dishonest about once you’re on board? Trust is critical in any professional relationship, and this experience made it clear that Stepan does not prioritize transparency. While I did not receive an offer, I would not have accepted one based on this interaction. Candidates deserve honesty, and I would caution others to be mindful of potential red flags when considering opportunities here.

The interview process involved three remote interviews and an onsite interview. The onsite included a plant tour and meeting the site team. The interviews focused on my experience and included some technical questions. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, and the interviewers were good. It seemed like a good place to work with good learning opportunities. I received an offer but declined it for personal reasons.

It was a quick hiring process. I first spoke with a recruiter, then the hiring manager, and then I advanced to the final rounds where I interviewed with four members of the leadership team. I thought it went well, and it was clear they were impressed with my experience and what I could bring to the table. The only negative was that the recruiter could have been more considerate of the candidates by providing more specific feedback or at least calling instead of sending a generic email, especially after we went through so many interviews. It seemed like they ended up hiring someone with 15+ years of experience when the job only required 4+ years, which was a bit disappointing.
