Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at State of Michigan.
Financial Analyst
I applied on 2/27 and got an interview request by email on 3/9, with the interview happening on 3/15. The interview was on Microsoft Teams and I spoke with a panel of 3 people: the Facility Manager, the Finance Manager Accounts Payable, and the Ast. Business Manager. The first interview was mostly S.T.A.R. format and wasn't technical.
- Can you share a significant challenge you faced and how you navigated it?
- Can you describe a situation where you initiated a procedural change and how you managed it?
- Tell me about a time you encountered a conflict and the steps you took to resolve it.
Financial Analyst
It was a behavioral interview. You gotta answer in STAR format. They need a SITUATION or TASK, then ACTION you took personally, and the RESULT. It's typical for behavioral interviews to penalize you for not following the format. You should give examples where you personally did well. Don't talk about your team or say general stuff. So use examples where you can talk about your personal contribution and how it helped the team succeed. Also, be ready to talk about one time when things didn't go well or you weren't happy with the outcome.
- Tell me about an instance where you questioned multiple people to achieve a specific outcome.
Financial Analyst
It took them about 2 weeks to get back to me after I applied to set up an interview. After the interview, I waited 3 weeks for them to respond. The interview was mostly behavioral.
- Can you tell me about a challenge you've encountered?
