Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at State of Michigan.
Accountant
I applied in early June and got a call mid-July to schedule an interview for late July. The interview was face-to-face and they asked if I'd accept an offer, to which I said it depends on the finances given my experience. The next day, they contacted my references and then asked for permission to speak with my current supervisor. I had previously requested they only do this if they were seriously considering me. They proceeded to call my supervisor and then invited me back for a second interview in early August. This second interview involved five more behavioral questions and both interviews lasted about 30 minutes each. Two weeks after the second interview, I received an email stating the position had been filled by someone else. Based on their communication style and my earlier conversation about not wanting to cause issues at my current job, I felt they misled me and have now created an awkward situation at work.
- What does your current supervisor consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?
Accounting Assistant
The initial communication about the Accounting Assistant role was great, but the interview process itself was not. There were four interviewers who seemed unsure of who should be asking which questions, creating an awkward atmosphere. The interview was very short, only lasting about 5 minutes. No one escorted me out, I wasn't told when to expect a decision, and no one thanked me for my time. It took nearly two months to get an email saying they hired someone else. They also couldn't provide any feedback on how I could have been a better candidate for future opportunities.
- Describe the most challenging workplace situation you've faced and explain how you managed it.
Accounting Assistant
I sent in my application and got a call to set up an interview, which they then confirmed via email. The very next day, I got another email scheduling me for a test, which I took a week before the actual interview. A few days after that, I got the results and I passed! The interview itself felt like it went pretty well. They mentioned it would take about two weeks to hear back. It's been 10 days now and I'm super anxious!
- Can you tell me about your prior experience with software?
