Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SSE.
Project Manager
The first stage was informal, covering the role's basics and expectations, and was a personality check to see if I'd fit the company and role. The second stage was competency-based, discussing my past experience and how it relates to project management. It included many questions about overcoming challenges, working with high-profile stakeholders, and the job's demands. Overall, it was a good experience, though I didn't get an offer.
- Can you share an instance where you dealt with a difficult stakeholder?
Project Manager Apprentice
The interview process began with a deductive reasoning test administered by SHL. Following that, there was a video interview conducted through an SHL system where I had to record responses to five questions. This part heavily emphasized health and safety. There was no human interaction until the final interview. The video interview was presented as an opportunity to understand my background, skills, education, and experience, though the questions asked didn't seem to facilitate that goal.
- What are the hazards present in the SSE work environment?
- What is your assessment of the reasons behind these occurrences?
- What preventative actions do you suggest?

- Competency-based questions were asked.
- Technical interview including case studies.
