Got an email from HR to set up a phone interview. The interview was straightforward, and they asked about my work history and relationship-building skills as they related to the job. I was told I'd be recommended to move on and should expect to hear from the hiring manager, a senior executive. However, instead of an interview call, I got a generic email that misgendered me ('miss' instead of 'mister') and stated I wasn't moving forward. I never got a follow-up email from the interviewer or the hiring manager I was supposed to connect with.

I sent my resume, and a few days later, I got an email to schedule a phone interview for the next day. When the time came for the phone interview, the recruiter called 15 minutes late, and I was starting to think she might not call at all. When she did call, she apologized for the delay, which I appreciated, and I could tell she had a lot going on. I thought the phone interview went really well, and the recruiter was nice to talk to. She mentioned she'd call me back right after talking to the hiring manager to get the go-ahead for an in-person interview. She said they were looking to start interviewing as early as the following Monday (the interview was on a Friday). I didn't hear back from her that day, but I figured she ran out of time at work and left for the day since the call was around 5 PM. I didn't hear back until Wednesday of the following week, when she informed me they had moved on with other applicants. Even though the recruiter contacted me later than expected, I appreciated her letting me know.

I applied online and then had a phone interview with a recruiter. After that, I interviewed with someone filling in for the hiring manager who was on PTO, which was one of the worst job interview experiences I've ever had. The substitute hiring manager showed a lack of professionalism during the interview. Instead of thoroughly reviewing my resume, they solely relied on my LinkedIn profile until about 6-7 minutes into the interview, which did not provide a comprehensive overview of my experience, qualifications, and skills. The whole interview left me feeling unfairly judged and gave me the impression of a biased interview. Moreover, the questions posed were inconsistent with those asked of other candidates, which is essential for maintaining fair and consistent interview processes for all applicants. It was also clear that the substitute hiring manager did not fully understand the role's requirements. When I asked about the challenges and exciting problems mentioned in the job description, the response I received was vague and did not provide clarity about the role. The response I got was: "The caveat is there is still some unknown in terms of the actual role that this form; what happened was the group had three managers, three senior managers, and one just left, and so there's a bit of bringing somebody back, and depending on who we find, there might be a bit of reorg as well." I was only asked 3 questions, listed below, exactly the way the interviewer asked.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • Given that you're a VP and were a VP in your previous role, why are you interested in a role that could be Director, even though the job description lists Senior Manager/Director?
  • Can you elaborate on your statement about building a company from the ground up?
  • You described yourself as a "Visionary Leader." This is typically a quality one hopes others will ascribe to them rather than stating it oneself. Could you explain what underlies this self-assessment and what makes you comfortable describing yourself as visionary?
