First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Southwest Airlines.
Technology Analyst
I had an interview with my hiring manager. We talked about my experience, successful projects, task prioritizing, and overall values for a company and team. I made sure to discuss my successes with projects I've owned and the challenges I faced and how I managed them. It seemed like my HM appreciated that level of detail.
- Can you tell me about a project you worked on in the past that went well?
- Describe a successful project you have been a part of.
- Can you share an example of a project you owned that was successful?
Business Analyst
It was a 30-minute phone call. They first gave a general intro to the position and what they expect from the job. Then we talked about behavioral questions related to my resume and background. It finished with me asking questions about the position or the company. They said it was an entry-level position and they were looking at recent grads or current students. I have about 3 years of industry experience. I didn't get a second round interview. They suggested I apply for "business" roles at SW, saying I'm a great fit for the company, but my experience in documentation & gathering requirements was lacking, and they found other candidates with more experience.
- Can you tell me about your experience with documentation and requirements gathering?
- What experience do you have collaborating with other teams to resolve issues?
- Which coding languages do you know and can use to communicate with technical teams?
Business Analyst
I applied online and a recruiter contacted me. The recruiter was easy to work with and set up a phone interview. Then I had a 1-hour in-person interview at their office. They asked for my US passport, fingerprinting, and other ID when I visited. I was an experienced professional, and I'm not sure if they had already made a decision and just called me for headcount, asking general questions. I think I did really well. The recruiter called me back and said they wanted to do another phone interview, but they did not give me an offer. Overall, I think the decision may not have been based on merit. I think the managers hire based on favoritism or other factors, this is my opinion. The only positive was the recruiter was easy to work with.
