Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sony Music Entertainment.
Coordinator
We had 4 rounds for this interview. The first round was a self-recording interview. Then, the second round was with a recruiter. The third round was with department heads. The last round, the fourth one, was with the whole team. It was super relaxed, and we just talked about stuff unrelated to the interview.
- What does the team do?
- Given the music industry's constant evolution and change, what technological, cultural, or business shifts do you anticipate will be most impactful in the coming years?
- Which artist, song, or album from our current roster is your favorite?
Coordinator
My interview experience at Sony has been pretty consistent across multiple attempts. While I respect Sony's standing in the music industry, my personal interactions have been less than ideal. The process starts strong and feels promising, but it tends to sour around the hiring manager interview stage. It's been a lengthy process, often spanning several months, and these hiring manager interviews have frequently been uncomfortable. The interviews often feel like interrogations, with hiring managers asserting dominance rather than engaging in a conversation. Typically, there are 3-5 rounds, followed by a period of silence for weeks or months before a final rejection. I might consider interviewing again in the future, but for now, I'll focus on other music and entertainment companies.
- What is your motivation for applying to Sony?
- What are your genuine reasons for seeking employment with us?
Coordinator
I applied on the company website and got an email for a one-way recorded interview about 5 days later. There were 5 pretty easy questions about my fit for the role. I submitted my interview a few hours before it was due, and then 3 minutes after the deadline they sent an email saying they were not moving forward. Honestly, I feel like they could have at least pretended to watch my interview videos.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What are your strategies for staying organized and managing your time effectively?
- What aspects of an administrative role do you find appealing, and what do you dislike about it?
