First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SolarWinds.
Sales Engineer
First, I had a phone screen, then a 1:1, and then they wanted an in-person demo. They also wanted me to do a full day's worth of work beforehand without compensation, which seemed unrealistic given the salary.
- Can you dedicate a full day to prepare this task?
Sales Engineer
They usually hire at the beginning of each quarter. It's an intense and competitive environment, so expect new faces regularly. Avoid contacting them late in the month or at the end of the quarter. My process took over 3 months. Knowing someone inside can help. They start by introducing the company and the role. They'll ask for specific details about your past work. For sales roles, be ready to explain the sales funnel and mention if you've used Salesforce, as that's a big plus. They dig deeper, asking about innovation (thinking outside the box), your background (still employed, reasons for leaving), motivation (top 3 things you value in a job), values (how you define and measure success, any mistakes made), performance (are you doing well?), and teamwork (how you motivate others). Finally, they'll ask if you have questions. Make sure to ask good ones, as they take notes. Good luck, it's a great company!
- What is something you would avoid in a new job?
- How do you define success for yourself?
Sales Engineer
Had 3 phone calls, one of which was a Demo Call. These calls touched on basic IT knowledge, some sales-specific topics, and presentation skills. It was great talking to multiple people from different parts of the organization to get their perspectives.
- How would you deal with rejection?
